BACKGROUND : More than 50,000 years ago, a shimmering mineral of uncommon brilliance came to earth in a meteorite. Dr. Moissan’s research showed these sparkling crystals were not “diamonds from space,” but rather a new mineral—silicon carbide (chemical composition: SiC). Named moissanite in his honor, this stunning jewel is extremely rare in nature. So rare, in fact, that the dream of using it in jewelry was an impossibility until a way was discovered to create these incredible crystals in a laboratory.
